The Sequence Board Game for Kids is great fun for preschoolers or young elementary school students. It is a simple strategy game and is an ideal tool for learning animal vocabulary, categorization and for social interaction as you play the game together.

Number of Players: 2 – 4

Ages: 4 – 6

Target:Teaches thinking and strategizing. Trains memory, vocabulary and categorizing.

The Sequence for Kids Game is a fun and educational game to use in Speech Therapy. If you haven’t played it before, here is an introduction to how it goes.

The game comes with one game board, 42 game cards and 84 game chips in four different colors (red, yellow, green and blue).

It can be played by up to four players or up to four teams. Each player or team gets either the red, yellow, green or blue colored chips and keeps them in a pile near them. Also, each player or team is dealt three playing cards face down. The left over cards remain in the deck and should be placed face down somewhere handy near the game board. They will now serve as the draw deck.

Players may look at their own cards and then take turns playing their cards, by choosing one card that they place face up in front of them for everyone to see. The player then puts a chip on the image on the game board that shows the same picture displayed on his or her chosen game card. At the end of his or her turn, each player takes a new card from the draw deck, as each player should always hold three cards in their hand.

Please note that once a chip has been placed on the game board, it cannot be removed unless it is by a dragon card. The dragon and unicorn cards in this game serve a special purpose. With the unicorn card in hand, players can put a chip on any vacant space they wish. The dragon card, on the other hand, let’s you remove any chip on the board that another player or team had placed there earlier.

The overall goal of this game is to form a row of four same-colored chips on the game board before the other players or teams do. To win, the row of chips can be placed horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

There are different variations on the game, for example, Sequence for Adults, Sequence for Kids, Sequence States & Capitals, Sequence Numbers and Travel Sequence. This variety makes it easy to find a game that’s fun to play and educational for everyone.

Using the Sequence Board Game for Kids in Speech Therapy

Vocabulary Development and Categorizing

The Sequence for Kids Game is great for teaching new vocabulary or recalling previously learned words. This is because the playing cards for the Sequence for Kids Game are beautifully illustrated and contain pictures of familiar animals and so I sometimes use them as a simple vocabulary teaching or category sorting task.

For example, as a parent or speech therapist you might ask the following questions to further learning: “What kind of animal is this?”, “Where does this animal live?”, “What sound does it make?” or “What are all the animals that live in the zoo?”

The age guide given on the box is 3-6, and for the game played with typically developing kids I would say this is good advice. This means for kids who have delays or are just developing their verbal skills, adaptations might be needed. Many children under 6 will need support with the strategic part of the game (blocking others chips, placing 4 in a row etc.) but this is all part of the fun of playing games together!

Simple ways to support kids as they learn to play might be to play one-on-one without a group of children or to play with just a small group of children. Another idea is to play with open cards so players can help each other.

Thinking, Memory and Strategy

Nice about this game is that you can expand beyond the original scope of the game and train cognitive skills as well. For example you can utilize the cards to play a game of memory or a matching game with older kids.

Another idea is to simply group the colors, or to look at the card together with your child and identify the animals or sound the animal makes. Also, to make it a little more challenging for older kids you can change the rules a bit, for example you can have the players build rows of five or more chips instead of four to be considered a winner.

In conclusion, the Sequence for Kids Game is the perfect combination of having fun and learning at the same time. It is just the right amount of time to play for younger kids’ attention spans while also being educational.

Now you know all there is to know about the game – you are ready to play. Have fun!
